Randall's Island, NY
November 30, 2024
Dr. Lopez and the Rugby Research and Injury Prevention Group, an affiliate of the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) took on the 2024 New York Sevens Invitational in Randall’s Island, New York this past November. Hosting over 150 teams and 1700 athletes, from around the world as far as the Cayman Islands, Peru, and the UK, HSS was given the opportunity to medically staff the event with a range of individuals. Those in attendance included Dr. Victor Lopez Jr., Dr. Lasun Oladeji, Dr. Aashish Patel, Dr. Paul Calat and the direct team members from RRIPG. Populated around the fields for injury surveillance collection and surveying athletes in the medical tent, we were fortunate enough to equip our Regional Coordinator, Ms. Erica Marcano, MS ATC CSCS, 5 trained ATCs, 3 Sacred Heart University MS ATC students as well as 8 2024 RRIPG interns.
The New York Sevens Invitational, hosting teams from High School, Community and Elite play, offered an athlete cohort across a wide-range of rugby divisions and age groups. This Invitational initially started in 1958, moving to Randall’s Island in 1967, celebrating its 66th year, has experienced a rapid growth in participating teams, athletes and spectators. Being the biggest and longest-running single-day 7s tournament in the US, RRIPG & HSS was, and is, extremely honored to be the devoted medical team for the surveyed athletes.
