6^th International Consensus Conference on Concussion in Sport

 

The 6^th International Consensus Conference on Concussion in Sport will be October 27 – 28, 2022 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Dr. Victor Lopez Jr, Dr. Richard Ma and Mr. Christian Victoria, Dr Kiera Borthwick (MD 2026) and Dr Som Singh (MD 2023) members of the Rugby Research and Injury Prevention Group, and SPRINZ/AUT Research Associates, and members of the Rugby Codes Research Group will be honored to present for the fourth-IOC-supported-conference, topics relevant to the growth of rugby in the Americas.

We are honored to be discussing our Hospital for Special Surgery’s Registry data, and the AUT/SPRINZ rugby-codes on-going project, on the USA North American Rugby-7s RISERugby injury surveillance project and its injury preventive-potential data, focusing on head injuries within the sport of U.S. Rugby-7s.

We thank New York University Professors Danielle C. Ompad, PhD, NYU Urban Epidemiology Laboratory, and Meryle G. Weinstein NYU, applied statistics and  Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, for their guidance of Mr. Christian Victoria, MPH, NYU Urban Epidemiology Lab and Hospital for Special Surgery, for his exemplary work in this area.

We also thank Dr Robert C. Cantu, MD Neurosurgeon, Emerson Hospital & Cantu Concussion Center and Clinical Professor Neurology and Neurosurgery, Clinical Diagnostics and Therapeutics Leader AD and CTE Center Boston University, school of Medicine, for the honor of sharing his depth, insight and guidance in aiding us to get our work to this renown conference. He is a 2022 member of the expert panel at the 6th International Consensus Conference on Concussion in Sport.

While at the IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury & Illness in Sport 2012, 2016, 2020, and now for our inaugural debut at the IOC concussion Conference in 2023. Lopez, Ma, Victoria et al have presented consecutively for four conferences in a row at the IOC to advance the understanding of US Rugby.

We also would like to thank the governing board of NOCSAE for their generous sponsorship to help nurture our data, to get us to this event.

This is on the heels of our group presenting a work shop with Dr Patria Hume, Dr Ma and Dr Lopez, at the IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury & Illness in Sport which is the premier international conference for those interested in clinical aspects of sports and exercise medicine. This conference had a diverse faculty representing the pre-eminent international authorities in injury and illness prevention. This triennial conference provides the unique opportunity for the global sport and exercise medicine community to meet face to face in the ideal environment that Monaco provides.

This is the premier concussion conference that creates the global statements for sport and combines its data that is conducted with the five other International Federations (World Rugby (WR), the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI), and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA)), the IOC.

CONVENTION CENTRE The Postillion Hotel & Convention Centre, a modern and elegant, vibrant venue has a total of 252 hotel rooms, 31 meeting rooms on 3000 m2, a bar, a BBQ restaurant, gym and private parking with 89 parking spaces.

The Postillion Hotel & Convention Centre is located in Amsterdam, only 6.5 kms from the Amsterdam Central Station and 16 kms from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, which is the 5th largest European airport. From a three-minute walking distance from the venue there is a direct connection to two of the metro lines – 50 and 51 – of Amsterdam.

With a maximum of thirty minutes travelling time on public transportation all main touristic attractions are available, like the Rijks Museum, Leidseplein and the Johan Cruijff Arena & Ziggo Dome.

 

A statement from the Organising Committee:

The 6th International Consensus Conference on Concussion in Sport has been confirmed and will be held in Amsterdam on 27 and 28 October 2022.

On 20 May 2022, the Organising Committee, made up of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Association Football Federation (FIFA), the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), World Rugby and the International Automobile Federation (FIA), agreed that the Concussion in Sport Consensus Conference would go ahead, confirming the following:

• An updated agreement has been established by and confirmed between the six Organising Committee members.
• A review of the governance model covering the Organising Committee/Scientific Committee responsibilities has been completed. This governance model will apply to the Amsterdam Conference. Under this revised governance model, the Organising Committee is responsible for:

(i) sponsoring the conference
(ii) conference logistics
(iii) the selection of the independent Scientific Leadership Team.

Under the new governance model, members of the Organising Committee will not have any input into the scientific programme; nor are they able to sit as members of the Scientific Committee or contribute in any way to the selection of the remaining Scientific Committee members. One member of the Organising Committee will attend Scientific Committee meetings as an observer, responding to logistical questions.

The current Scientific Committee will continue under the leadership of Kathryn Schneider and Jon Patricios. The Scientific Committee Leadership Team will be enhanced to add perspectives on CTE and ethics, and will now include:

(i) Professor Robert Cantu (USA)
(ii) Professor Mike McNamee (independent medical ethicist, Wales).

• The full Scientific Committee (maximum 12 members) is responsible for all scientific reviews and the Consensus Conference scientific programme and structure.
• The Concussion in Sport Group (CISG) remains independent and has no official involvement in the organisation or delivery of the Concussion Consensus Conference. Furthermore, the Concussion Consensus Conference organisers remain committed to making any output/resources from the conference freely available to all those who wish to make use of them.

Following the Amsterdam Conference, the Organising Committee is committed to a further governance review to assess the most recent model and address issues not included in the 2022 governance review.
